What is the best type of castor oil to buy?
There isn't one castor oil that's necessarily 'best' for everyone, but quality and processing can vary significantly between products.
A good place to start is to look for a castor oil that is pure, cold-pressed and produced without chemical solvents such as hexane. You may also want to consider organic sourcing, packaging and how transparent the brand is about where and how its oil is produced.

1. Look for 100% pure castor oil
Start with the ingredients.
A pure castor oil should have a very simple ingredient list. Look for Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil rather than a product containing additional oils, fragrances or unnecessary ingredients.
This is particularly important if you're buying castor oil specifically for castor oil packing, where a generous amount of oil is applied to a compress and held against the skin.

2. Choose cold-pressed castor oil
You'll often see the term 'cold-pressed' when shopping for castor oil.
Cold pressing is a method of extracting oil from castor beans without relying on excessive heat during the pressing process. It is a relatively gentle, mechanical method of oil extraction and is one of the features worth looking for when comparing castor oils.
If you're unsure how an oil has been extracted, check the product description or ask the supplier.

3. Check whether it is hexane-free
You may also see castor oils described as hexane-free.
Hexane is a chemical solvent that can be used to help extract oils from seeds on an industrial scale. Although the solvent is subsequently removed during processing, some consumers prefer oils that have been extracted without the use of chemical solvents in the first place.
Choosing a cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil means the oil has been mechanically pressed rather than relying on hexane as part of the extraction process.

4. Consider organic castor oil
If choosing organic products is important to you, check the sourcing carefully rather than assuming that all castor oil is organic.

When comparing products, look beyond prominent words such as 'natural' or 'pure' on the front of the bottle and read the full product information to understand exactly what you're buying.
5. Look at where your castor oil comes from
Castor oil comes from the seeds of Ricinus communis, the castor plant.
India is by far the world's dominant producer of castor beans and castor oil, so seeing India listed as the origin of a castor oil should be considered a positive.

6. Pay attention to the bottle
Packaging is easy to overlook, but it's another useful consideration when choosing an oil.

What should good castor oil look and feel like?
Castor oil is naturally much thicker and more viscous than many familiar carrier oils.
It typically has a pale yellow to almost colourless appearance and a dense, slightly sticky texture.
That thickness is normal and is one of the characteristics people often notice when using good-quality castor oil for the first time.
Does castor oil need to be organic?
No. Castor oil does not have to be organic to be castor oil.
However, choosing an organically produced oil may be important to you if you prefer products grown under organic agricultural standards.
Rather than relying solely on marketing language, look for clear information about the oil's sourcing and production.
Does castor oil need to be hexane-free?
Not all castor oil is produced in the same way.
If avoiding solvent extraction is important to you, choose a castor oil specifically described as hexane-free and check with the manufacturer if the production method isn't clear.
Is cold-pressed castor oil better?
