Castor Oil Packs: Benefits, How to Use Them & What to Expect

Posted on

Castor oil packing may be enjoying a wellness renaissance, but this is certainly not a new practice.

For generations, castor oil has been used externally as part of traditional health and wellness routines. Practitioners and users around the world have long valued castor oil packs for their potential to support digestion, circulation, inflammation, discomfort and general wellbeing.

Today, the practice has found a whole new audience - and for good reason.

Castor oil packing is simple, affordable and can be incorporated into your routine at home.

As a nutritional practitioner and colonic hydrotherapist before founding Castorvida, I was familiar with castor oil packing long before it became a social media trend.

The problem wasn't convincing my clients that it was worth trying.

The problem was getting them to actually do it.

Traditional castor oil packing involved oil-soaked flannel, towels, plastic coverings and often a hot water bottle. It could be messy and inconvenient.

That was one of the reasons I created Castorvida - to make the traditional castor oil pack simpler, cleaner and much easier to incorporate into modern life.

So, what exactly are castor oil packs used for?

What is a castor oil pack?

A castor oil pack is a way of holding castor oil against the skin for an extended period, most commonly over the abdomen.

Castor oil comes from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant and is particularly rich in an unusual fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, which is responsible for many of castor oil's distinctive properties.

Traditional packs used layers of oil-soaked cotton or wool flannel covered with plastic and towels.

Modern reusable packs such as the Castorvida Original Castor Oil Pack make the process considerably easier, holding the oil against the abdomen while helping to contain the mess.

What are the benefits of castor oil packs?

This is probably what brought you here.

Castor oil packs have a long history of traditional use, and practitioners and users commonly report incorporating them into wellness routines for:

Scientific research specifically into external castor oil packs is still relatively limited, so not every traditional or commonly reported benefit has been established through large clinical trials.

However, that doesn't erase generations of traditional use, practitioner experience or the experiences reported by people who regularly use castor oil packs.

At Castorvida, we're interested in both.

Castor oil packs for digestion

Digestive wellness is one of the main reasons I became interested in castor oil packing in the first place.

During my years working as a nutritional practitioner and colonic hydrotherapist, I have worked, and continue to work, extensively with people struggling with sluggish digestion, constipation and digestive discomfort.

Castor oil packing was one of the traditional practices I encouraged clients to explore alongside the fundamentals of good digestive health - nutrition, fibre, hydration, movement and lifestyle.

Think of it as one part of a wider digestive wellness routine.

Castor oil packs for inflammation and discomfort

Another reason people turn to castor oil is for areas of inflammation, stiffness, aches and discomfort.

Ricinoleic acid has attracted scientific interest for its biological activity, including inflammatory pathways, which helps explain some of the longstanding interest in castor oil.

In practice, many people use castor oil packs over areas such as the abdomen, knees, shoulders and other joints as part of their self-care routine.

For smaller targeted areas, like the thyroid, wrists or ankles, the Castorvida Mini Compress can be particularly useful.

This is also where the versatility of castor oil becomes apparent.

The Original Pack is ideal for abdominal packing and is where we'd recommend most people begin. The Mini can then be used when you want to explore castor oil application on more targeted areas.

Castor oil packs and circulation

Castor oil packing has traditionally also been associated with supporting healthy circulation and lymphatic flow.

Warmth, gentle pressure, rest and massage are all commonly incorporated into traditional castor oil rituals.

It's another reason many people describe the experience as warming, soothing and deeply relaxing.

And perhaps we shouldn't underestimate that final benefit.

The benefit we don't talk about enough: stopping

Modern wellness has become surprisingly busy.

We're tracking sleep, counting steps, hitting protein targets, taking supplements and trying to squeeze yet another healthy habit into an already packed day.

Sometimes looking after ourselves starts to feel like another job.

One of the things I've always loved about castor oil packing is incredibly simple:

It gives you permission to stop.

Put your pack on.

Make a cup of tea.

Read.

Watch something you enjoy.

Listen to music.

Breathe.

Or do absolutely nothing.

Those 60 minutes don't have to be productive.

They can simply belong to you.

How to use a castor oil pack

Modern castor oil packing is remarkably simple.

1. Choose a good-quality castor oil

Look for a pure oil without unnecessary fragrances or additives.

At Castorvida, we use organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil in glass bottles.

2. Apply your oil

Apply a small amount of castor oil to the inner layer of your compress.

Castor oil is wonderfully thick, so you don't need to saturate the pack. 2-3 Tbsp is plenty!

3. Position your pack

Place your Castorvida Pack comfortably over your abdomen and secure it.

It should feel comfortably snug rather than restrictive.

4. Relax

Aim for around 45–60 minutes.

Read, meditate, watch television, listen to music or make it part of your evening wind-down routine.

5. Remove and store

Remove the pack and follow the care instructions supplied with it.

That's it.

No complicated ceremony required.

How often should you use a castor oil pack?

Many people incorporate their castor oil pack into their routine several times a week.

The key is consistency.

I'd much rather see someone use their pack regularly for 30 minutes than decide they need an elaborate two-hour ritual and consequently never get around to doing it.

If you're completely new to topical castor oil, start gradually and see how your body responds.

What should you expect?

Castor oil packing is very individual.

Some people become devoted to their packs remarkably quickly. Others simply enjoy the warmth, relaxation and ritual.

Customers tell us about all sorts of experiences - from better sleep and improved digestive comfort to more regular bowel movements and less bloating. Others say they feel less stiff, more relaxed, or simply appreciate having a regular reason to slow down and make time for themselves.

You don't need to expect a dramatic overnight transformation.

Wellness is very often about what we do repeatedly, rather than what we do once.

Give yourself time to experience the ritual and see what you notice.

Who should take extra care?

Castor oil is generally well tolerated topically, but it's always sensible to patch test first if you have particularly sensitive skin.

Don't apply castor oil over broken or irritated skin.

If you have recently had surgery, have unexplained or severe abdominal pain, or have a medical condition that makes you unsure whether abdominal packing is appropriate, seek individual advice from an appropriate healthcare professional.

And, of course, persistent digestive problems, unexplained pain or significant changes in bowel habits should always be properly investigated rather than simply self-treated.

Castor oil packing is not recommended during pregnancy.

A simple 30-minute Castorvida ritual

If you've just bought your first pack, try this:

Minutes 0–5
Put your phone away. Change into something comfortable. Dim the lights and make a cup of herbal tea.

Minutes 5–10
Apply your castor oil, put on your Castorvida Pack and get comfortable.

Minutes 10–25
Read, listen to music, journal, practise slow breathing or simply rest.

Minutes 25–30
Think about three good things from your day and begin winding down for bed.

Nothing extreme.

Nothing to measure.

Nothing to achieve.

Just half an hour that belongs to you.
