Castor Oil for Dry Eyes - Promising Results from a New Zealand Clinical Trial

Posted on

Dry eyes and blepharitis are more than just an annoyance - they can cause significant discomfort, blurred vision, and a constant gritty sensation that disrupts daily life. While artificial tears and prescription treatments are commonly used, a growing body of research is turning to natural remedies. One in particular is castor oil, and a clinical trial in New Zealand has brought encouraging evidence to light.

What Is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the eyelids that often leads to dry eyes. It typically results from blocked meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of the tear film. When these glands malfunction, tears evaporate too quickly, leaving eyes dry, irritated, and inflamed.

The New Zealand Castor Oil Study

A study conducted in New Zealand explored the use of castor oil as a treatment for dry eyes associated with blepharitis. Participants in the trial were instructed to apply castor oil to their closed eyelids, twice daily,  over a period of several weeks.
The results were striking and researchers reported the following:
"Clinical improvements in eyelid margin thickening, telangiectasia, eyelash matting, madarosis, cylindrical dandruff, and lid wiper epitheliopathy were limited to treated eyes (all p < 0.01), while greater decreases in staphylococcal and seborrheic eyelash crusting were observed in treated than control eyes (both p < 0.05). No adverse events were reported during the treatment period."
And concluded: "Topical castor oil application effected significant improvements in ocular surface signs and symptoms in patients with blepharitis. The favourable therapeutic profile would suggest that castor oil demonstrates promise as a potential treatment for blepharitis, and support the conduct of further efficacy trials with longer follow up."
These improvements can be attributed to the natural anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and emollient properties of castor oil.

Why Castor Oil Works

Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, a unique fatty acid with both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. It’s also an effective emollient, helping to lock in moisture and support the health of the tear film. For people with blepharitis, this combination addresses several root causes: inflammation, bacterial overgrowth, and tear instability.

How to Use Castor Oil for Dry Eyes

Use the Right Type: Always choose organic, cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil for eye applications. Purity is essential.
Application: At night, apply a drop or two to clean fingertips or a cotton pad and gently massage the eyelids. Alternatively, apply the oil to the eyelids and cover with our Castorvida Mini Compress.
Be Consistent: Participants in the trial applied the oil to their eyelids twice daily for several weeks.
Benefits may include:
  • Improved Tear Stability: The oil may help improve the function of the meibomian glands, leading to a more stable tear film.
  • Reduced Redness and Irritation: Castor oil may provide relief from inflammation and irritation.
  • Longer-lasting Moisture: Eyes may stay lubricated for longer periods, reducing the need for frequent use of artificial tears.

A Natural, Evidence-Based Option

The New Zealand study adds to a growing base of evidence supporting castor oil as a viable, natural treatment for dry eyes and blepharitis. For anyone seeking relief without relying solely on pharmaceuticals, castor oil offers a safe, accessible alternative.
As always, speak to your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment — especially one used around the eyes.
